c. BC 1200s: Troy

Maybe I’m stretching a point, but, after all, The Myth Makers counts as a historical…

Title: Child of the Gods
Author: johne
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3893
Characters: Vicki
Setting / Era: post Trojan War (c. BC 1250s?)

The setting is well realised, but the main joy is the characterisation of Vicki who is no less irrepressible and resourceful just because she’s now a Trojan Princess. Especially when someone is threatening her husband’s people. It’s a short gem of a tale.

Title: Semper Fidelis
Author: time_converges
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 6091
Characters: Tenth Doctor, Donna Noble
Setting / Era: WWI, Spanish Flu pandemic

A neat little historical story (of the classic, almost 60s kind) with Donna and the Doctor trapped on board the infected ship City of Exeter with a dilemma. )As a side note it is quietly but definitely Ten/Donna, if that sort of thing alarms you.)

1920s: England

Title: Impossible Things
Author: eyesdelight
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1456
Characters: Fifth Doctor, Joan Redfern
Setting / Era: 1920s, presumably.

One of those stories that fan fic was made for. This is lovely. Why has the author written nothing else? (A sequel for the Tenth Doctor story Human Nature, so mild spoilers for that.)

1920s: Durham

I shall be away for a bit, but here’s a festive story to tide us over the holidays:

***

Title: Festive Restings
Author: dblauvelt
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3762
Characters: Professor Bernice Summerfield, Wolsey, Eighth Doctor, Seventh Doctor
Setting / Era: 1920s (1922, 1924) Durham

There’s not very much made of the setting, I admit, but it’s a great story and it’s all Christmassy and appropriate, so there. ;-)

Title: Ten Times The Doctor (Almost) Got Hitched
Author: vvj5
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 5549
Characters: First Doctor, Second Doctor, Polly Wright, Ben Jackson, Third Doctor, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Liz Shaw, Fourth Doctor, Harry Sullivan, Sarah Jane Smith, Fifth Doctor, Tegan Jovanka, Turlough, Sixth Doctor, Evelyn Smythe, Seventh Doctor, Bernice Summerfield, Eighth Doctor, Charley Pollard, Ninth Doctor, Rose Tyler, Jack Harkness, Tenth Doctor.
Setting / Era: 15th C Mexico, 16th C Scotland, 18th C Hampshire, Crimean War, 15th C France, 1st C AD Kent, 1843 Brussels, 1903 London, 15th C England.

Not a serious historical by any means whatsoever. I apologise unreservedly for any offense taken by the historical figures involved, but hopefully this chronicle of the Doctor’s near misses when it comes to marriage will amuse.

1700s: Scotland

Let’s continue on a theme here…

Title: A Time to Remember
Author: Gary Merchant
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1114
Characters: Jamie McCrimmon, Seventh Doctor
Setting / Era: 18th C Scotland

Perhaps again not another strict historical, but there is some scene setting – and who needs any excuse to rec a perfect fix-it for The War Games?

(Just a note, because there is a follow-up for Zoe here, although it really has no place here, but how could I not say?)

1700s: Scotland

Title: The Magic Door
Author: LilacFree
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1396
Characters: Tegan Jovanka, Jamie McCrimmon, Fifth Doctor, Nyssa
Setting / Era: 1700s Scotland, pre-The Highlanders.

Again, maybe it’s not a serious historical, but it picks up on a possible view of the time regarding the unlikely TARDIS crew, cleverly, and includes a (pre-Highlanders) young Jamie. It’s a lovely little piece.

1888: Whitechapel

Title: A Jack of All Troubles
Author: Clarissa
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2809
Characters: Ninth Doctor, Rose Tyler, Jack Harkness
Setting / Era: Whitechapel, 1880s

While Nine takes Rose on a tour of her city’s past, Jack gets into trouble (in a really bad case of mistaken identity). There are a couple Americanisms (gottens all round – sorry, I’m an incurable picky Brit, I know), but it’s still a bit of historical fun.

1794: France

Title: What Not To Miss While Travelling In France
Author: MinervaFan
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 478
Characters: First Doctor, Ian Chesterton, Barbara Wright, Susan Foreman
Setting / Era: French Revolution (from The Reign of Terror)

A series of drabbles set during this serial. And since that is partially missing, let’s be glad for a little bit extra time with our heroes as they experience history at first hand. (It’s not necessarily all it cracked up to be).

1850s: Georgia

Title: Balm of Gilead
Author: Patrice
Rating: PG
Word Count: 37,496 (11 chapters)
Characters: Fifth Doctor, Tegan Jovanka, Turlough
Setting / Era: 1850s Georgia, slavery.

This is an brilliant fic – a well-written historical, tackling some difficult issues but with some unsettling alien interference and exceptional use of the TARDIS team in question. I can’t recommend it enough.
